Bile & gallbladder  Health

Food Sources of Betaine

  1. Beets are very rich in B vitamins, calcium, iron and powerful antioxidants such as alpha lipoic acid (ALA). All of these support healthy liver function and bile flow. Poor bile flow is extremely common and is linked to weak stomach acid, inadequate liver detoxification and poor fat metabolism.

  2. Without adequate fiber, up to 94% of this toxic bile can be re-absorbed back to the liver and put back into circulation.
Beets produce a large amount of the two most powerful antioxidant liver enzymes: superoxide dismutase and glutathione. (11)

      Blood Sugar balance

Beets are loaded with beet sugar, but have been shown to help support healthy blood sugar levels because of the high levels of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) found in beets, which offset the effects of the beet sugar.

ALA is both water and fat-soluble, which allows it to penetrate any tissue in the body and help resolve free radical damage.
Beets are the highest sources of nitrates. Nitrates from plants such as beets, celery and cauliflower are very good for you, while nitrates found in packaged meats are quite toxic.
Just one fresh beet a day will thin the bile and flush the liver and gallbladder. Beets are best grated raw with lemon juice, but also have benefits when eaten cooked.

Use Lemon and Apple Cider Vinegar:

Both of these help to improve both stomach acid and bile activity.  Squeeze fresh lemon in water, on salads and meats.  You can also use lemon essential oil in water.  Put a tbsp. of apple cider vinegar in 8oz of water and drink throughout the day.   This will help to thin the bile.

6. Eat Bile Healthy Foods:

Some of the best things for bile flow include beets, radishes,  artichoke, asparagus, celery, lemon, lime, grapefruit, cucumbers and carrots.  Juicing these veggies or have a big salad with fresh squeezed lemon everyday.

7. Use Bitter Herbs:

A common saying in natural health is that “bitter is good for the liver.”  Anything good for the liver is good for the gallbladder.  This includes ginger, arugula, endive, cilantro, turmeric, dandelion, cumin, fennel, mint, milk thistle, yarrow, leeks and parsley.
Many cultures around the world have bitter foods to begin their meal.  They may drink ginger or peppermint tea, have pickled ginger, have a salad with arugula, dandelion and cilantro, etc.  These all act to stimulate digestive juices and give the bile flow a boost for optimal digestion.

8.  Use Fermented Veggies:

Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, pickled ginger, etc. all contain organic acids, enzymes and probiotics which help to improve digestive juice secretions.  I recommend using one of these with all of your heavier meals and especially any meal with protein and/or fat.
